Benefits of Buccal Massage
Buccal Massage: The Best Holistic Facial Treatment
Written by Lindsay Dynes, RMT
In recent years, buccal massage has grown in popularity, and for good reason with it’s laundry list of therapeutic benefits. What sets this treatment apart from a more traditional facial massage is the inclusion of techniques that target tension in deep facial muscles only accessible from inside the mouth. The treatment is named after the buccinator muscle that resides in the cheek. The highly innervated buccinator muscle functions to maintain proper tension in the cheek and assist in the action of chewing. Beyond the buccinator however, there are over 40 muscles in the face that allow us the ability to perform important daily functions such as eating, talking and emotional expression.
Many iterations of facial massage treatments have been performed for centuries in the East and the West with the same goal of decreasing stress and tension, while improving overall healing. This type of ritual engages the nervous, lymphatic, circulatory and musculoskeletal systems in tandem to provide deep release and relaxation. Techniques used are designed to provide rejuvenating effects for all layers of the skin, fascia and muscles that typically go untreated in comparison to the rest of our body’s aches and pains. Stimulation of the facial muscles and tissues at a deeper level increases circulation allowing the delivery of nutrients and fresh oxygen to support a radiant complexion.
Buccal massage is a holistic approach to nurturing skin and overall well being. Improved lymphatic flow from this type of treatment releases stagnate fluids and toxins that reduces puffiness and enhances the natural contours of the face. A boost in circulation improves the performance of skin cell function to help the absorption and effectiveness of skincare ingredients and provide a natural plumping effect to the skin. Release of fascial tension softens fine lines and wrinkles associated with facial expressions such as smile lines or between the eyebrows.
Buccal massage is the ideal treatment for anyone experiencing TMJ dysfunction, clenching, teeth grinding, headaches/migraines or high stress. Due to the high innervation of facial muscles, there is a significant link to the quality and performance of these muscles and emotional regulation. There is a deep sense of relief when tension in the muscles of the jaw and face are released and regular treatment of these areas can make a considerable difference in stress management. There is also plentiful research indicating the link between tension in the pelvic floor and jaw. Promotion of relaxation in the face and jaw can support the release of muscles and fascia in the pelvic floor.
Specialized buccal massage training signifies the importance of precise movements and pressure to navigate the contours of the face and bone structure for optimal results, ensuring it is both comfortable and effective. The holistic approach to this type of treatment contributes to a profound sense of well-being that addresses each individuals unique health goals. It is an art and a science to provide both the therapeutic and cosmetic benefits of a buccal facial massage - a true glow from the inside, out.
