Cosmetic Acupuncture
What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Written by: Nicole Brown, R. Ac
Cosmetic acupuncture is more than just a skin treatment!
Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial acupuncture, is a treatment that focuses on the appearance and health of the face. You may be looking to slow down the natural aging process of the skin, reverse skin aging/damage, reduce inflammation, improve skin texture and tone, reduce hyperpigmentation from sun damage, reduce symptoms of acne, reduce scarring, improve facial symmetry, reduce jaw tension, etc.
Acupuncture helps to relax tight muscles, stimulate weak muscles and promotes blood flow, stimulating the production of your skin’s primary proteins (Collagen, Elastin and Keratin). These tiny needles cause a microtrauma and stimulate the body to activate its healing properties, increasing circulation to this area. Your acupuncturist will often incorporate other body points, individualized to your needs, to systemically enhance the treatment and results
Acupuncture increases circulation and promotes blood flow. Blood is responsible for nutrient delivery, oxygen supply, waste removal, inflammatory response, collagen and elastin collaboration and overall tissue health. Acupuncture indirectly helps to promote and maintain the production of your collagen and elastin by improving blood circulation. Additionally, acupuncture helps to relax tight muscles, stimulate weak muscles and reduce stress levels (an increase in stress can negatively impact production of these proteins).
Additional therapies used during a cosmetic acupuncture session at Crafted Balance
Celluma Light Therapy
Applied for 15-30 minutes while the needles are being retained to provide efficient dual-benefits.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light as a therapeutic treatment for multiple skin concerns, muscle and joint pain and hair loss. The light energy is used to improve cellular performance, with healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Celluma is FDA cleared, using proven red and near-infrared wavelengths, for skin care and pain management. This light therapy mimics a natural photo biochemical reaction process and delivers safe, UV-free low-level light energy through the high intensity LED device.
Facial Cupping
Application of a high quality oil or serum is applied to allow these small glass or silicone cups to glide along different areas of the face and neck. These therapeutic cups are used to create a gentle vacuum suction, helping to increase blood circulation, further contributing to the benefits previously mentioned.
Gua Sha
Used when required and may not be needed in every session
In this treatment, gua sha is used to break up adhesions, release fascia, tight bands of muscles and to help detoxify the skin
How often should I come for treatment?
Treatment frequency varies depending on your goals, age, skin health and overall health.
