What is Acupuncture?
Written by Nicole Brown, R. Ac
Acupuncture is a modality originally used in Chinese Medicine, originating over 2,000 years ago in China, that involves the insertion of a thin needle into specific points on the body to promote healing and balance within the body. Acupuncture is based on the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), a non-substantial energy that flows through the body. When Qi is balanced and flowing freely, the body is healthy. By using the meridian system and stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can affect all aspects of the body from your immune system to nervous system.
FAQ about needles
Do they hurt?
Most people experience minimal discomfort, with sensations ranging from a slight pinch to tingling or pressure.
How big are they? Acupuncture needles are very thin! There are different widths and lengths that can be used on different areas of the body.
Are there risks? As with any needle puncturing the skin, there are risks involved! Minor bleeding, bruising or soreness are the most common side effects and are generally very mild. Infections and organ punctures have been documented, but are extremely rare when done by a Registered Acupuncturist.
